What is a Meta Description?

A meta description is a short snippet of text that appears in search engine results when you or your page are listed on a SERP. Although they’ve been around since the early days of the internet, they’ve grown significantly in importance in the past few years. In fact, the presence or absence of a meta description—as well as its keywords and relevance to a given query—has a measurable impact on how high your page ranks in search results. Similarly, positive meta descriptions (ones that are engaging, relevant, and descriptive) can increase click-through rates (CTR) as well as your average click-through rate (CTR) when compared with no meta description or a description that isn’t optimized for the query.
